Photography Practice For Final Images

Today I did test shots for the images I want to produce for my word and for my brand that I was given.

First I practiced the shots I want to produce for my word - browse.
The glasses will be covered in newspaper so you can't see the actual lenses of the glasses. She will also be my model for the final shoot too with perfect skin a bold lip and slick hair.

The setup will be this -

The lighting will be quite soft but bright enough to get the soft skin. The back ground will be white too and not black - we used black today as the white one was unable to come down.
I like the shots I produced as I feel I like the way I was thinking about what I wanted to do and how the images came out on the practice is how I want them to be on the final image but better.

Here are some of the practice shots -

For my brand I also did some practice shots, as it is a perfume I want to show a lot of skin and body especially the upper body such as the chest and shoulders. So I wanted ny model to one side showing some of the body but her face looking at the camera. The back drop will also be white or a very pale pink colour to keep it very neutral.
The set up will be the same but with a brighter light as Dior has a bright sense to their images and I want to replicate that.
The hair will be loosely up and off the face possibly a little around the face and the make up will be very natural but flawless and eye brows will be very strong.

Here are some of the practice shots -

I was really pleased with how the images came out as I knew what I wanted to do I just needed to make sure that they would work. I'm pleased with the outcome of the images too I really like the set up, the poses and the ideas I had in my head.the only thing that's a little annoying is when you use a studio and for some reason or another the back drops don't like to come down. So we had to use a black one today. For the look the model had it worked well but for my image I need it very bright and white so the black wouldn't work.

Over all I'm really pleased with the images and I'm glad I had a practice session to see that my ideas would work.

Storyboard Feedback

I presented my story boards that I produced in a recent post to my class and Sharon and I got some good feedback from where they think I should take my image.

I explained both of the boards I had made, one being very natural and neutral colours and the other having a pink tone to it being really youthful.

The feedback I got was that the boards were good I had clear indication how I wanted the lighting, the hair, the make up and the colour schemes. But I wasn't too sure myself on what image I actually wanted to produce.

The ideas they gave me were to concentrate on the first board going into the neutral shades, the look of the ads are very wedding-ish. Not in your face wedding but there is a slight hint of one, the white and the pale pink, the settings and the props in the shoot do give away that there is a wedding theme.
I have decided to go with this idea but I also have to link it to my word browse.

I was thinking of doing a white or very pale pink back ground, the model will have her hair back vey slick, most of doors perfume ads for Miss Dior are very skin baring. My model will be wearing something that shows off her skin such as the shoulders and the chest area.
A wedding look would be very simple make up but perfect skin and eye brows, the lips would be very soft possibly naked lips and the eyes have a little darkness to them too.
A typical bridal look on the model is what I am thinking and looking st the Dior ads that is exactly what they have produced too and I want to keep in the same theme of what they have produced.

I have produced a story board of what I actually want to produce in styling, poses, hair, make up, lighting and cropping the image -

Story Board - Dior

As I have been given the brand Dior and I also have to link it back to my word for the previous little project which was "browse".

The first thing I did was look into ads they have already produced and I found these -

I feel most of the ads for the perfume Miss Dior are very well lit, very bight and the skin is so flawless. Most of the images are from the hips up wards or a full body shot. I think I want to focus more on a close up possibly starting at the bottom of the rib cage upwards.

The make up is a very flawless yet simple, which I will stick to keeping the skin soft and subtle, the eyebrows are defined, the eyes a little dark but mainly very soft looking and the lips are neutral too.

There are a lot of different hair styles in the ads, some are very loose and flowy and the others are tightly pulled back in to a pony tail. I think I like the loose hair flowing down the back with some texture to the hair the best, it looks very sexual which I think most perfume ads are - sexual yet classy as when you wear the perfume you want to be seen as classy and looking and smelling good.

Here are some of my ideas in story boards -

My first story board is based on the nude look, very natural and innocent. The hair will be wavy and flowy probably going back over the shoulders, the make up will be soft and neutral too. The image could be shot from a distance and the cropped to just the top of the body. The lighting will be quite full on so the skin looks flawless. The image will be very bright looking as most Dior ads are they aren't dull or dark for their perfume ads. I feel this look would appeal to most girls and women, as the nude look is very popular make up look at the minute and it would also appeal to older women too as it would look classy.

For my second story board I have based my board the ads for Miss Dior where there is a softer pink mood. I like this feeling of the ads as it looks very girly and youth full. I would use some pink flowers in the ad around the model, the hair would be soft and flowy too going over the shoulder. I would have subtle make up with a nice rosey pink lipstick to match the feel of the flowers. I want the vibe to be really girly, young and youth full. Most girls like to smell good and fell good aboutthemself and I feel the pinks and the youth fullness would appeal to them too.

My Brand - Dior

For my next project I got given a beauty brand which I have to produce an ad for. The product I got given was their perfume, so I will have to base my image on "perfume" which could be around the neck area, instead of lips for lipstick for example.

Background

Christian Dior is a French designer, first founded in 1946 it now is one of the biggest selling luxury brands of the 21st Century. The company designs and also retails handbamgs. purses, shoes, accessories, clothing for men and women, make up, perfume and skin care products. It's main target audience is for women but they do have ranges for men and for children too. They are sold world wide, in retail stores and online, their biggest competitors are well known too - Chanel, YSl, Burberry and Gucci.

The launch of the first Dior perfume was in 1947 called Miss Dior, it was names after his sister, after that more lines were added to the Dior perfume range and it became oneo fthe most popular perfume ranges to date.

Over the years the ads have changed, the way models advertise the product has changed and so have the actual shape of the bottle.

They are a well known luxury perfume line, they include really famous actresses such as Natalie Portman and Charlize Theron.

The one advert which I love that Dior created as the short film with Charlize Theron, it featured Marylin Monroe, Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich - they look like there about to take to the catwalk for Dior.

Design 4 - Face Charts & Looks

This is my first design on my face chart -

Products I Am Going To Use -
- Illamasqua matte primer
- Illamasqua loose powder
- Kryolan foundation palette
- Kryolan concealer palette
- Kryolan glamerous glow palette
- Illamasqua due palette
- Illamasqua or MAC palette for brows
- Supra colour palette

This design is based on the fourth idea I had, with the glitter on the eye brows. The glitter will be black and white representing the black and white of internet pages. The glitter will represent how we love to look on social media and how we love the gossip of internet pages too, it gives us a sparkle in our lives.
The image will be shot either face on or on the side so you can see all the sparkle on the eye brows.

Design 3 - Face Charts & Looks

This is my second design on my face chart I produced two face charts as  I have two different ideas for this look -

Products I Am Going To Use -
- Illamasqua matte primer
- Illamasqua loose powder
- Illamasqua white base
- Kryolan essence palette
- Liquid or Gel liner
- Illamasqua or MAC palette for brows
- Supra colour palette possible for the white lips

This design is based on the second idea I had, the codes across the face or the neck are going to based on actual computer codes based on social media codes for websites. The face will be pale like a piece of paper or the background to a website.
The codes will be coming up the neck - to show people being swallowed up by social media. Or the codes will be going across the eyes as were are blind to other things when we are on social media.
The image I want to produce will be a frontal shot to the camera to show the codes full on the face.

Practice - Week 2

In today's practice session we had to set up the studios like we did last week but just in our group as a 4. We took images of each other practised different poses and some different back lighting to see what images worked with what light.

Setting up the studio was the same as last week, we got two lights at the back of the studio with big soft boxes on them to keep the light soft, the sides we had two white reflector board reflecting the back lights on to the front of the model.
In front of the model we had the big three leg light with a beauty dish on the light facing the model but raised above the head slightly. We used a reflector too in some of the images to see what light it gave off.

Some of the images we too were hair flicking, hair at the front and the back of the face, side on shots and looking over the shoulder shots. We did use 3 different lenses a 100mm, 55mm and 85mm lens.

Unfortunately we forgot to get the photos from off the computer we used and by the time we remembered to do it they would have been removed off the computer. I have one or two photos that were on my phone that I took though..

I would say this practice session was good as it gave us the chance to see how organised you have to be when setting up a studio, getting everything set up correctly and safely, making sure all the lights work and are synchronised together too.
I enjoyed this lesson as I think it gave us a chance to see the different lenses and different lighting try work out what works well and what doesn't.
The only thing about setting up a bigger set up is that it takes more time, but the if you know what you are doing and where you want everything I think it is much easier to do.

Developing My Designs - Design 4

This design is based on the eyebrows on the face, framing them with sparkles and glitter!

Design 4
I wanted to produce a look which does focus on the eyebrows. I wanted to do this because I feel that we use books, the internet and social media and newspapers to look and research things that we like. These things give us happiness and inspiration as we look at what we want to look at. It may be celebrity gossip, or online shopping or looking on social media, we do these things because we want to. We browse all over the place and look at things that we want to look at because that's what gives us the sparkle in our life. We learn and we understand and we see what we want to see.
I feel this would be a good thing to base a design on as it on the eyebrows and I have found a Chanel campaign for inspiration and another great make up artist too called Natalia Marszalek. Their work is really cool and I think it would go really well.

I want to use pale colours on the skin keeping the skin tone really cool and icy like a piece of paper, on the face the jewels and glitter that will be used are going to be the same tones too but I will also include blacks in there too. The black will represent the words and letters we look at online. Everything is in black and white mainly unless there is a colour scheme but, black and white are both colours that are on opposite ends of the colour spectrum, are the most frequently used colours and when printed everything is black and white.

I would have the hair styled in a slick way keeping the hair off the face, the hair will be parted but will be tucked behind the ears. I want to keep the hair slick and smooth like paper. There will be no hairs out of place and it will be all in place nice and neat.

Here is my mood board with images that have inspired me to create this look -
These images are the inspiration in the textures and colours I want on my design -
- The ice - the icy skin tone of my model, the white will represent paper that we read from and browse most things from
- The black and white glitter - this is what I want around the eyebrows, showing we sparkle and love the internet, looking and searching for things that inspire us
- The rain drops - the glitter will mostly be white with a few black spots on, the black will represent the text you read where are the white is the majority of what we see as a background
- The blue ocean - the hair will be soft and tucked behind the ears, which remonded me of a soft sea flowing down the back of the neck like the hair
- Black and White text - My colour scheme will be black and white as they are the most popular colours to have internet websites, books, newspapers and magazines based on.

New Design Idea 4

As I was doing my research and my mood board presentation to my class, I then got told to research Peter Philips and hos Chanel campaign on the brows.
In his campaign he put jewels on the eye brows and they look so good!
I was really fascinated by this look and I thought this would be a good design to look in to.

For the look of this design I was thinking about keeping it white faces and maybe a contour to the cheeks to give it some structure, but not a lot of colour will go in the face structure.
The lips will be plain and covered over with the same colour as the face to try keep it plain as I can like a piece of paper.
On the eyebrows I will have jewels or glitter on them too to give the look some edge to it.
I don't want to over power the face but I do want to give it some thing about it.
I want to do this because when we look and browse at something there is always something about it that gives us that feeling that we are interested in it and it gives us inspiration or knowledge in it to keep going and keep reading - which makes some one happy.

Here are some images from the Chanel campaign by Peter Philips which I will base my design on -

Developing My Designs - Design 3

This design is all based on the new hype of adult colouring books, there supposed to reduces stress and the images ans books you can get are so amazingly detailed!

Design 3

This design I really liked too as it would be very detailed work that I would be doing, it also would be very basic make up. I would want to keep the skin and pale/flat as I can. The face would have foundation and powder on maybe a little paler than the natural skin depending on the models skin tone. Then the eyes would be very basic probably just mascara on the eyes so its fresh and natural and the eye brows would be defined but left very natural too. The lips will be the same colour as the face blended in and a flat white colour.
I want the make up to look like this because pages and paper are flat, there not 3D unless you make them and turn them 3D, I want the face to resemble the page, the peice of paper of which we are browsing off.

My first thought was to use the adult colouring book for the design going up the neck as in to be swalled up by words and colours and social media.
Then my tutor gave me the idea of using words and letters in stead. When you look as a website you look at what you think are words, but what they actually are, are codes. Everything you see online are computer coded, there not realy as paper and newspapers and books. It is all face and so we are blinded in to thinking it is something which it isn't.
So I have decided to take my idea along and use codes such as words and letters. HTML codes are used for everything we see, words, pictures, comment boxes, paragraphs, quotes, colours and links and so much more! They are the basic "language" of computering.
I want to mix up some codes to show how people are and how we are all different yet we are all hooked on social media and the internet.

The hair for this look will be straight and sleek but it will all be back off the face, going down the back. I want it to look like this so it looks like we hair is back just the face is showing. No hair will be around the neck or the face, we can "see clearly". This could also be a symbol that were getting swallowed up and blinded by society because we see with our eyes and if I decide to do the make up going over the eyes as a mask, it wont be the hair that is "blinding" us it will be ourself and what we wants to do is what we see.

I really liked the adult colour book design idea, this will be very similar with keeping the make up the same and having a detail going up the neck or across the eyes. I haven't decided which look I think would go best yet on the face so I will try it out on face charts and see where I get with that.

Here is my mood board for this design some of the pictures are different to what I want the final look to be but they give a similar effect -

The images I have chosne represent what I want to show in my design -
- The gray lines - I want to have to be slick and straight going back off the face down the back, paper is smooth and straight which is what the hair will represent
- The blue code - the codes are what will be on the face or the neck, I want to pick certain codes that will represent the word browse for example, comment box, paragraph or title
- The laptop with social media - all the codes are created so we can look at social media where ever we want, when we want on what ever device we want too.
- The text - text is what we see, we read and understand, gain knowledge from words and pictures, this is what we think we see when we are browsing online.
- The white - the texture of the skin will soft and supple, nicely powdered too, like the whitness of most websites, a nice even skin tone will represent the even-ness and blockyness of a website page
- The black hole - we are all becoming more and more obsessed with social media, it is putting us in to a blakc hole where we dont see anything around us going on any more. This will be recreated in the eyes or the top of the neck. The eyes can look swalled up or the neck can look like it is being swallowed up too.

Developing My Designs - Design 2

My second design was based on the new culture we have in expressing ourselves by getting tattoos.

I found some inspiring images that I know I really like but some people don't like the look of tattoos especially on women.

Design 2

This design is all about youth, empowerment and expressing yourself. I wanted to keep the skin really flawless keeping up to date with current trends, the eyes will be really smoked out and dark and the lips will be nude. Most of today's make up looks are all about the dark smokey eye and the nude lip.
On the face I was going to go further and add an inspiring word by making it look like a tattoo.

I liked this design because I thought it was really different to what other people would have thought if they had this word, but I don't know how much further I would be able to go with the design process.
I like the whole look of what it could be and in my feedback they liked the look of the tattoo'd imaged I found.

I would have the hair quite full and big, showing character and edgyness which will come from the make up and design of the image too. I want it to be full on and over the top with the hair and make up because I think that's how people express them self these days and they don't really care what people thing because they are being them self.

I personally don't know how I can change or add to it. In my other designs I know where I can go and where I can change it but with this one I think I have come to an end with it.
I really like the idea and design but I much prefer my other designs to this one.

This is the mood board where I expressed my ideas though, I do like how it came out and I  think its clear in how I want it to look as well -

In my mood board I picked images that would represent what i want to produce and bring across in the image -
- The feminism image - showing that men are equal to women and we should be able to express ourself how we want to, we shouldn't be different to them because we look different.
- The tattoo'd woman and "Freedom of expression" - she is showing free expression on her body, doing with it what she likes covering herself in head to toe as that is what she wants to do - browsing is looking at things and words and looking at tattoos could be interpreted the same. Also letting women express them self in how they want to too
- "Out dream yourself" quote - living life to the max to inspire woman to be who they want to be, a lot of women love the inspirational quotes you get on wooden plaques and give them as gift and have them hung around the house
- The grunge effect - I want the make up to look neat yet grungy, although not all women are that stereotype I think it goes with how I want the image to look and most women have different looks about them self today too there is no right or wrong any more
-  Waves - I wanted the hair to look a little messy not straight and not curly, this image shows that as not all the waves are the same they are all different

Developing My Designs - Design 1

As I have 3 ideas in my head of what I want to produce, I thought I need to do something different and interesting to make my word pop and stand out.

I got a researched a lot on Pinterest, Instagram, Google, I went to the library and I even took some of my own pictures out of books I have already.

Design 1

My first design is based on a woman with flawless skin, sharp red lips, winged liner and strong brows wearing some glasses - so she's "reading" something or "browsing" something.
I was looking in the internet for different ideas I could find based on paper, as this woman would be "reading the paper" I think had an idea that I could keep the make up the same, and she could wear the glasses but, the glasses could be wrapped up in a newspaper. So she's "browsing" the paper through her glasses but its actually wrapped around the glasses.
I think this would be relevant to my word because people browse a lot of different things, but one of the first things that was produced was the newspaper. Back in 1665 the first newspaper was published in England called The Oxford Gazette, in 1666 it was changed to The London Gazette.
I will keep the make up as I wanted it from the start, really flawless skin, contoured cheek bones, and the eye brows will be filled in too. I won't do anything on the eyes are they will not be seen behind the glasses if they are going to be wrapped in paper. I also want to have the lips really sharp and neat to give the look an edge to it.
I think in this day and age more women are making an effort with their appearance, they wear more make up, try out new make up techniques and take care of their image. Instead of reading newspapers and books, they read online books, books on kindles, they are on social media websites and always on their phone. It's like we are blinded sometimes by the internet.
This is why I want my model to have some really good make up to keep on trend but the glasses will in a way cover/blind her by all the social media we have today and we are all addicted to.
In 1665 when the first newspaper came out, people were more sociable, spoke to each other, weren't online all day and night either and they weren't blinded by it all like we are now.

The hair for this look will be soft waves through the hair but slicked off the face so all the emphasis is on the glasses and the hair will just be an added extra. I wanted to do this so the hair doesn't over power or get too much in to the face and ruin the whole feel of the image.

In my feedback when I said about how I want to develop this design they liked the idea of how the social media is brought in to the look too. It's a known thing these days that social media is what we live on and incorporating that seems to be a good idea.

Here are some images I have found and brought together from different sources such as Pinterest, Instagram and Google -
For my mood boars I used pictures that were inspiring to me which goes with the look of what I want to produce -
- The blind girl - showing we are blinded by society when we are constantly browsing on our phones
- The mobile phone  and the social media icons - this is what people base their life on now and it is getting to the point you look at that more than you speak to people
- The glasses - fashion is what is shared a lot on social media, people love to shop, browse and get inspiration from the latest celebs on the social media networks which is why I want my model to look fashionable in her make up and hair
- The sculpture - I want to sculpt the face with contouring and highlighting the correct areas, keeping in touch with the modern lifestyle women lead
- The waves - the hair will be in soft waves keeping on trend yet off the face to the face is clear to see, like people like to clearly see their Facebook
- The matte red - this is the colour and texture I want the lips to be, deep colour and clean application. Everything we browse is clean and in some formation - like lips are lovely and slightly overdrawn which is some women's daily application routine.

Moodboard Feedback

This week I did a presentation on my mood board which expressed my views and ideas on my given word - Browse.

This is the mood board I produced and showed to my class.

I started off by explaining what I did first when I got my word, I found the different meanings by using a dictionary, thesaurus and the online urban dictionary. I then went on to describe what ideas i had.

The first idea being the woman in glasses, looking very intelligent browsing the internet, with glam make up looking very unique and "boss" like.
The second idea was the tattoos expressing women's individuality and inspiration. The rage is all about tattoos now and expressing who you are on your skin which I thought was a very modern idea.
My third idea was the adult colouring books having the design going all up the neck or across the eyes which could look mask like. We use our eyes to "browse".

Whilst explaining my ideas to the class Sharon came over and spoke to me -
- I told her I was going to develop the first idea by having newspaper wrapped around the glasses to show were in a way blinding by browsing social media all the time and the newspaper came out first in 1665 which was our first way of getting news to the public
- she wasn't keen on the tattoo idea all that much and to be honest it isn't my favourite idea either
- she told me to research a man called Peter Phillips and look into his eyebrow campaign he did for Chanel which would be interesting for a new design
- one last thing was Sharon thought instead of doing the adult colouring book design up the neck, I should maybe use computer codes, as we look on a computer we think were browsing but were actually looking at computer generated codes not proper words

I also got feedback from my class mates too on a questionnaire

Most of the feedback said they liked how my ideas were very inspirational towards women, and that I had a range of ideas too, whereas I felt most people had one idea and stuck to that and developed on it. A couple mentioned the tattoo idea was interesting as it is a very modern take and you either like tattoos or you don't.
I also included words on my board that would be used in the tattoo idea which people thought was very inspiring too.

I'm happy with my feedback I don't think were was too much or mainly anything that I am unhappy with, I decided to base most of my ideas on women's fashion and modern trends and I think it came across to them too.
I will work on my ideas and develop them and change them like I have been told to do so. This will better me for the future listening to constructive criticism and working on my ideas.

Advertising V Editorial

There is a difference between advertising and editorial, if you don't know it then you won't see it when flicking through a magazine but now I think I can say I know the difference between them both.

I found this interesting quote too which makes a lot of sense to me too -

"While a guest editorial represents one person's opinion, the editorial pages of the nation’s best print publications are the home of serious, high-level dialogue. An advertisement, however, is nothing more than paid content that reflects whatever the advertiser chooses, within the boundary of good taste."

Fashion

Fashion is all about selling a lifestyle to people, images are taken of beautiful people wearing beautiful clothing that everyone will look at and want! This includes clothing, accessories, hair and make up. There so aspirational to people which makes them want to go out and buy those items, either the ads will look brilliant or sometimes, when I have looked in magazines, they will all look the same!

Beauty

Beauty follows the same as fashion, they show the image of a beautiful woman with beautiful make up, which isn't applied by herself, it is applied by a make up artist. The look which is given aspires women to want to look like that or apply their lipstick or eye shadow how the model is made up. You don't see any make up application and you don't really see any make up placement in the image either. The person looking at the image wants to look like the model but doesn't necessarily want the product they have used. In magazines you always see a variety of looks on models too so they all look the different and it's not all the same look which makes it more interesting.

Commercial

In commercial ads in magazines you see a lot of selling, different brands like to sell their products in different ways.
Chanel - a high price, classy brand who has their brand name, a little picture of the product and a beautiful model "wearing" the product is always seen in their make up ads
Rimmel - a more affordable, wearable brand who has text on most of their ads, a picture of the product, a beautiful model "wearing" the product there about to sell and their ads are more in your face "look at me".
Higher end brands like to sell "their" look to you, make you want "their" lifestyle and what they look like where as other lower end brands want you to feel better about yourself, want to sell you this product as its cheaper so they in a way have to persuade you to do it.
The main thing these ads want to achieve is making you think you cant live with out this product, trying to get you to go out and buy the product too.

More than one brand will use the same model at one time too, for example Cara Delevingne.
She models for so many brands! Her face will be all inside a magazine for different things such as bags, shoes and clothing. I've seen it myself!
But I have chosen two different kinds of brands in which she models for -

Topshop - she looks young and her age, in a parka coat, wet look denim jeans, some biker lace up boots and a little white vest. Her hair is bouncy and youthful and her make it looks natural but with those big brows she so well known for too. She looks her age and she is selling clothing and fashion to people her age too!

Chanel - here she looks young still as the clothing she is wearing is youthful with the stripes on the gloves, the bobble hat, the coat kind of thrown over her shoulder, the big clumpy costume jewellery round her neck and the floaty top. She looks young still but with the Chanel logo on everything on her she looks far more over priced, instead of selling us what she's wearing I feel she's making us envy her, she's so young and pretty yet wearing all these nice clothes. I think she looks stunning still but I feel some times what brands do is the wrong thing. I would much rather see her in something cute and fun which still reflect her as a person but without the big labels. Maybe a nice Chanel bag with the logo on as all their bags do, but sometimes the logo on everything is a little too much - especially for young girls who want to dress and be like her, it could be sending the wrong image.

Editorial

Fashion and beauty editorials are made with a theme in mind, a whole range of looks are created on this one thing which makes it even more interesting and inspiring than just a normal fashion or beauty ad. The images are supported by text to make them seem like there in a story sequence, even if it isn't even relevant. The editorials we have now are printed in magazines are online magazines or even on websites and blogs now.
Editorials are not about selling things, they are there to inspire people, made up of different genres, different looks and styles. It's about selling dreams!
When making an editorial especially for beauty, there could be up to as many as 7 lights in the studio, just to get that perfect shot. It not about how many lights you use its about getting the right look for the shot and making it perfect.

Advertorial

These "ads" are disguised to act like editorials, the images will flow the same, telling a story in a sequence, a set of different looks and styles too, but they are actually selling things!
They will have the product on the page showing you what it is, what it does and the price! Like Max Factor make overs in magazines, it will show products and show you different make overs on different women too. It is showing the the product on the page and on a person so you think its better than just a normal ad with a "model".
Ads and editorials are not well recognised if you don't know what you are looking for but they are definitely in magazines disguised as ads but there secretly not.

My Word - Browse

So today I got given my word which I have to base this project on and I was given the word -
Browse

WHAT
I started of my brainstorm by finding the proper definition of the word using online dictionary, an online thesaurus and urban dictionary to get a few different ideas.

Dictionary - VERB
                     1. Survey goods for sale in a leisurely and casual way
                     2. (of an animal) feed on leaves, twigs or other high-growing vegetation

                      NOUN
                     1. an act of casual looking or reading
                     2. vegetation, such as twigs and young shoots, eaten by animals

Thesaurus - dip into, give the once over, pass an eye over, scan, skip, read, glance at, graze

Urban Dictionary - browsing, internet, surfing, web, Google, search, Facebook, surf, Wikipedia,                                        shopping, searching, browser, bored, website, computer, looking, YouTube

I looked at these definitions and thought what could this person be browsing, what could they be doing which shows there browsing -
1. "Browsing this site!" - looking at a blog, reading an online article or even online shopping
2. "Action of moving your eyebrows" - could be reading an interesting piece of writing, article, shopping and seen a great deal
3. "Browsing in the shop" - shopping, looking around, looking for something in particular
4. "Looking through a newspaper or book" - looking for the TV guide in the paper, searching for an article you want to read or even looking through something to find what you want/like

WHO
Once I had an idea on the definition and the different things you would do whilst "browsing" something I thought who would do this -

1. Students
2. Teachers/lecturers
3. Worker
4. PR
5. Assistant
6. Artist
7. Female boss
8. Teenagers/men and women

THE LOOK
Browse is based on books, words and pages, they are matt colours and are mainly black on white with numbers and letters on the pages. They are 2D - flat on the page, there are various fonts which could be strong and blocky or girly and swirly but they all have clean edges and in an order.
The model will not be wearing many accessories as when browsing something it is all flat, there may be colour on the page but nothing that will stick up or out the computer screen or book. In one of my ideas I would like the model to be wearing glasses - the thick rimmed over sized ones with lenses in not sunglasses but they can be oddly shaped - just something different with an edge to them.

IDEAS
When I first got given this word I didn't really know where to start with it but the more researching I did the more ideas I got. I ended up thinking about 3 different things of what my end design could be which is based on the word browse.

1. I thought of a woman having flawless skin, a nice strong liquid eye liner and some sharp lips! The model will have the bold glasses on looking at something or holding a newspaper as she is "browsing" though it.

2. This came to my head when I thought about words, when your reading a book, looking online or browsing something in general there is always something to read- whether it just be a price. Therefore, in the year 2016 tattoos and self expression are all the rage, I think in women sometimes they look very fierce when they have a written tattoo above their eye brow. I chose a design like this to show individuality and a bit of an edge to beauty. The model will have dark smokey eyes, flawless skin and a nude or pink lip with an inspirational word or little quote written on the girls face be it above the eyebrow or around the side of the hairline.

3. I was on Pinterest for my final idea and I wrote in the search bar "pages". Immediately the new craze over adult colouring books came up first. I had a brilliant idea about using the colouring book pictures as inspiration. I would use a lace type design to go all around the neck and up to the jaw line or have the lace over the eyes as an eye mask. The rest of the make up on this one will be flawless skin, mascara on the eyelashes to make them thick and a nude lip to keep the emphasis on the neck design.

I haven't finished thinking about my designs yet and I may change them or add to them I am not sure but I think what I have though of so far is quite good, I'm pleased that I sat down and really thought about what I want to do with my word. I am pleased with myself for thinking of a few different things which are all totally different too.

I now need to concentrate on the designs getting more inspiration, getting pictures out the library and changing/developing my designs too.

Practice - Week 1

Today in the studio we re-capped on setting up the studio and the camera, making sure everything was correctly set up and the camera was on the right settings.

Once we did a little recap we set up the studio with a new lighting set up. We used a 3 head lighting, where the light is attached to a stand with three legs at the bottom, it is on a pole with handles so you can turn the direction of the light, higher or lower and twist the light around too whilst is it in the air. It does add time to the set up of the shoot though.
We used diffusers, these are big rectangular cloth like boards, you attach these to stands and lift them as high as you need them. You place a light behind the diffuser with a soft box over the light to make the light softer. Or you don't need to use a soft box on the light just have a hard light but the larger the soft box the more light it will give out any way.

When you are shooting close up images for beuaty ads which is what we are going to do then it is best to shoot the pictures with a tripod stand. This will make sure the image will always be the same as you will keep the model the same when you have got the right pose.
The only things you will change to a beauty image once you have got the right pose is -
            - the lighting
            - the hair is all in place and tight and neat
            - the eye brows are perfect
            - the lipstick and eye liner is on point and neat
You change the little things in the image to make the image perfection.

SET UP 1
This is the first set up we did with a beauty lens.
From the front of the studio facing the back -

This set up, adding the light going through the diffusers adds soft light to the back and the sides of the head and face. The colour of the hair changes its a lot more vivid in colour and when the hair is up it makes the facial features and the neck/jaw a lot softer. If the image comes out too bright the aperture needs changing to make the skin softer, not whiter. The skin looks lovely and soft, the cheeks and the colours on the cheeks add a more contoured look too. The white reflective boards which were added in to the set make the light bounce back into the shot instead of being lost.
We tried this set up with a background a different colour, with the lights coming in from the back it makes the background look fake and the image looks photoshopped, so we worked out that strong background colours do not look good with this  set up.

We kept the same set up  but took the diffusers out the background so it was just a soft box light behind the model, this made the pupils in the image go square, which for a close up would look very cool but very un-natural.

The lens was changed to a 100mm Macro, we did some really up close work on the eyes and we saw some really interesting shots of the eye from different angles and different compositions.
The camera was tilted to one side - this caught the eye, the eyebrow, a bit of the nose and a little bit of the hair too. This was a cool image as it was on a slant and caught a few different features.
Landscape - this picture looked really good too but it looked very normal, just the front view of an eye and the eyebrow.
Portrait - this picture caught the whole front of the eye and eyebrow but dragged the image down as it had a lot of cheek on the bottom of the picture too which you don't really need in a beauty image.

The next picture is the eye on the side, you can see all the details of the eye ball and the eyelashes, it looked very very interesting and to see how all these kinda of images are shot was really good to learn too.

SET UP 2
This set up we used a 85mm lens.
From the front of the studio facing the back

Replacing and changing the set up slightly, we added black boards to the front of the set down each sides of the camera, This was a really cool set up as the dark boards add more detail to the face, add more structure, add more tone into the skin but keeps it looking soft. The lights coming from the back still add softness to the pictures but more structure to them. This set up is good for portraits and for close work too like what we are doing.

These are images where they are compared  to SET UP 1 and SET UP 2 -

I really enjoyed this lesson learning more about close up work, different set ups and different compositions the model can do to get some really interesting images.
The difference between the two set ups you can really see, the first set up makes the skin look so soft and smooth, everything looks very sharp and neat. Where are in the second set up there is more contouring and shadows in the skin, the skin is soft too but the face doesn't look as nice as it does it the first set.
Personally I like the first set up for the perfect skin, the hair highlight, the sharp details on the face and skin too. I like the second set up but I much prefer the first one.
